OILS:

Coconut oil

Coconut oil is easily absorbed into the skin and is known to have many health benefits, including those from vitamins E and K, as well as its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties.

Almond Oil

There’s some research suggesting a link between topical application of almond oil and anti-aging effects. Almond oil may also help with skin barrier repair

Grapeseed Oil

Studies suggest that grapeseed oil has anti-bacterial, antioxidant, and wound healing properties. It may have possible anti-inflammatory and anti-aging effects as well

Olive Oil

According to animal and human studies, olive oil may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound healing effects when applied topically. There’s also a possible link between topical application of olive oil and anti aging effects.

Sunflower Seed Oil

There’s evidence that sunflower seed oil may help with skin barrier repair. Research also shows that it has anti-inflammatory effects and may help with wound healing.

Argan Oil

Argan oil is a popular skincare oil that can help with skin barrier repair. Studies suggest that it has anti-inflammatory and wound-healing effects.1 Topical application has also been shown to have an anti-aging effect on skin by improving skin elasticity.

Rosehip Seed Oil

Rosehip seed oil may help with skin barrier repair. There’s also evidence that it can help fight signs of aging and has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Jojoba Oil

There’s promising research on jojoba oil that suggests it can aid in skin barrier repair. It also has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound healing properties. Jojoba oil can also improve the absorption of topically applied medications. It may have anti-bacterial effects.

Marula Oil

Research shows that marula oil has significant moisturizing benefits for the skin. It’s also non-irritating and may help the skin retain moisture.

Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil has been used to help manage acne, as an anti-fungal, and to reduce inflammation.

Safflower Seed Oil

Sometimes used in cooking, safflower seed oil has also been used directly on the skin to help manage signs of eczema.

Composition of Oils

Why are natural oils so effective for the skin? It’s because they contain a host of ingredients with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, including:

Benefits of Oils

Natural oils have a variety of research-backed benefits.

Many natural oils:

  • Moisturize (keep the skin from losing moisture)
  • Soothe the skin (have an emollient effect)
  • Have antioxidant effects (prevent damage from free radicals)
  • Have anti-bacterial properties
  • Have anti-inflammatory effects

Barrier Repair

Evidence shows that many natural oils have a barrier repair effect. Oils with more linoleic acid than oleic acid may do a better job at repairing the skin barrier. Oils with more oleic acid may irritate the skin.9

Reduces Scarring

Some natural oils, like rosehip oil, help with wound healing and may also reduce the appearance of scars.10

Reduces UV Damage

Sun damage can seriously impact the look of your skin. Natural oils won’t protect your skin from sun damage (you need sunscreen for that) but some may help reduce UV damage. One 2007 animal study found a link between topically applied almond oil and the prevention of structural damage due to UV radiation.

BUTTERS:

Top 10 Plant-based Butters and Their Skin Benefits

Mango Seed Butter

Mango seed butter contains vitamin A, C, and E, all of which have proven antioxidant properties. It's excellent for skin that doesn't need a lot of extra moisture but can benefit from anti-aging properties.

Olive Butter

Olive butter can be sold on its own or in combination with shea or coconut butter for an extra creamy texture. Olive oil is rich in vitamins and minerals, has been shown to lower inflammation, and is perfect for dry skin.

Hemp Seed Butter

It's important to note that, while hemp comes from the same family of plants as cannabis, it doesn't contain THC. Hemp seeds contain lots of omega-6 fatty acids, and hemp seed butter is easily absorbed into your skin, making it perfect for dry or damaged skin.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is one of the most well-known nut butters—and with good reason. Not only is it rich in nutritious fatty acids, but it also has anti-inflammatory properties, ideal for damaged and irritated skin. It's also rich in vitamin E and can help fight the effects of aging.

Almond Butter

Roughly ground almond butter is great as an exfoliating agent, but it can also be used to help your skin deal with UV damage to prevent premature aging.

Cocoa Butter

Cocoa butter is rich in antioxidants and is often used to help lock in moisture. It's used to protect skin during winter months by acting as a physical barrier to the harsh elements. It has a distinctive, delicious smell and you can use it head-to-toe.

Coconut Butter

Coconut butter is rich in unique medium-chain fats that offer a completely different moisturizing profile to other butters. It contains lauric acid, a natural antibiotic, and also provides various nutrients that can help calm your skin. Coconut butter is made from the meat of the coconut, making it an excellent natural exfoliant.

Macadamia Butter

Macadamia butter is full of vitamins and minerals to keep your skin looking healthy and young. It also contains lots of flavonoids that help protect your skin from free radical damage, and it has a creamy texture, making it a pleasure to apply.

Kokum Butter

Kokum butter is easily absorbed into the skin without any greasy residue, making it perfect for oily skin. It also has antibiotic properties and is a natural anti-inflammatory compound.

Babassu Butter

The babassu is a Brazilian palm tree, and babassu butter is made from cold-pressed, sustainably- sourced babassu seeds. It's high in lauric acid and is easily absorbed into the skin without feeling greasy.

OTHER INGREDIENTS

Epsom salts

  • Soothe the skin. Epsom salt bathwater can soften rough, dry skin, and exfoliate dead skin cells. ...
  • Reduce soreness and pain. ...
  • Reduce stress. ...
  • Promote foot health. ...
  • Draw out splinters

Cream of Tartar

Not only is cream of tartar good for your recipes, but it can actually help out your health, too! It's known for treating arthritis, combatting heartburn and even clearing up acne-prone skin.

Benefits of Kaolin Clay

Although kaolin doesn't boast a wide range of skin benefits and it might not be the most multipurpose of skincare ingredients, it's an effective treatment for an oily complexion and could be a great addition to your weekly skincare routine for the following reasons:

  • Binds sebum: According to Cook-Bolden, kaolin absorbs excess sebum (the oily substance our skin makes) and moisture in oily skin.
  • Controls oil and shine: Got a shiny T-zone? Kaolin can mattify your complexion by removing excess oil from the skin's surface.
  • Draws out impurities: Kaolin complements acne therapy regimens as it effectively draws out impurities from deep within the skin, dries up blackheads, absorbs excess oils, and minimizes the appearance of pores, leaving the skin feeling soft and smooth.

SLSA : Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate

SLSa is naturally derived from coconut and palm oils and is classified as a safe skin friendly surfactant for both skin and hair because of its large molecular structure. This mild plant derived surfactant creates a lather that effectively removes surface oil, dirt and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin.

Polysorbate 80 (Poly 80)

What Is Polysorbate 80? Polysorbate 80 is a skincare ingredient used in cosmetics and personal care products to improve the texture of products. Polysorbate 80 is used as a surfactant, emulsifier, and solubilizer, helping to produce smooth, easy to apply skincare and body care products. It binds oil and water preventing your tub from getting slippery or oil from floating on the waters surface.

Citric Acid

Citric acid is a natural ingredient derived from citrus fruits. Citric Acid works by exfoliating the upper layer of dead skin cells to help clean pores, even skin tone and soften and smooth the skin. AHAs can also be used as pH adjusters. pH adjusters are ingredients added to products to ensure they are mild and non-irritating – not too acidic (low pH) or too basic (high pH).
